The ICC Champions Trophy, known as the "mini World Cup," is a high-stakes cricket tournament featuring the top teams from around the world. First introduced as the ICC Knockout Tournament in 1998, it was rebranded in 2002 and has since become a fan favourite for its shorter format and intense rivalries. Hosted by various nations, the tournament has delivered memorable moments. After a hiatus, the Champions Trophy returned in 2025, bringing excitement back to cricket fans.

Where to Watch ICC Champions Trophy Matches

The ICC Champions Trophy will be broadcast in India on major sports channels. Star Sports, the official broadcaster, offers extensive coverage in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. DD Sports will provide free-to-air coverage of all India matches, semi-finals, and the final, ensuring fans without subscriptions can still enjoy the action.

When does the ICC Champions Trophy Take Place?

Historically, the ICC Champions Trophy does not have a fixed annual schedule like other tournaments, such as the ICC Cricket World Cup or ICC T20 World Cup. Instead, it is typically held every four years. The most recent edition took place in 2017, and after a hiatus, the ICC announced that the Champions Trophy will return in February 2025, hosted by Pakistan.

ICC Champions Trophy Format

Unlike the ICC Cricket World Cup, which features a larger pool of teams, the Champions Trophy focuses on the world's elite cricketing nations, providing a fast-paced competition that is over in a matter of weeks. Traditionally, only the top 8 teams in the ICC ODI rankings qualify to participate. This exclusivity adds an extra layer of competitiveness, as no weak links are present—every match feels like a clash of titans.

Group Stage

The tournament generally kicks off with a group stage, where the eight teams are split into two groups of four. Each team plays every other team in their group once in a round-robin format. Points are awarded as follows:

  • Win = 2 points
  • Tie/No Result = 1 point
  • Loss = 0 points

At the end of the group stage, the two top teams from each group advance to the semi-finals. Net Run Rate (NRR) is often the deciding factor in cases of tied points, keeping every delivery meaningful.

Knockout Rounds

Once the group stage wraps up, it’s a straight sprint to the finish with semi-finals and the grand final. These knockout matches mean there’s no second chance—a single strong performance can secure glory, while a single misstep can spell elimination.

This single-elimination format ensures that fans are treated to high-intensity, nail-biting games. It's cricket at its purest, where every boundary, wicket, and over matters.
